I am one of the participants of the just concluded service learning training organized by Secondary Education Board (SEB) Abuja, in collaboration with the U.S Embassy, Abuja. We had resource persons such as Mr. Scott Ganske, Princess Ugonma Akanu and an amiable team headed by Mr. Paul Ejeh of the Bilateral Education SEB Abuja.
WHY SERVICE LEARNING?
This programme was put together on the rising need of SEB Abuja to make learning student-centered, activity-filled, long-lasting, fun and applicable to the community.
Earlier on, in this light our board dropped the Traditional Teaching Approach (TTA), and adopted the Modern Teaching Approach, which is learner-centered and activity-filled.
So it is no longer business as usual where the teacher is the knowledge bank pouring out knowledge and information to the students. Every child has some form of knowledge gained and not a tabula Rasa.
Service learning is an experiential approach in Education which teaches students to engage in activities that addresses community needs. It is a research based Teaching method which connects school based curriculum to real life.
